First Over-the-Counter Birth Control Pill Approved by FDA in the US

Washington: The US government has given its approval for the first over-the-counter birth control pill. This means that it will be the first daily oral contraceptive that can be obtained without a prescription. This decision has been welcomed by reproductive rights organizations and leading medical associations for a long time.

The pill, called Opill (norgestrel), has been available by prescription since 1973. However, with the recent approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it will soon be accessible to consumers online and at various retail locations, such as drug stores, grocery stores, and convenience stores.

Patrizia Cavazzoni, the director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, stated that this approval is significant as it provides millions of people in the United States with a nonprescription daily oral contraceptive option for the first time.
